December 2024
Congratulations to Dr Chris Fearn on successfully defending his PhD! Thank you to Dr Jo Elson for coming down to Portsmouth from Newcastle to lead the thesis defence.

April 2024
We took a laboratory trip to the University of Oxford to attend MitOx 2024. Kelly Doughty and Areeba Marib presented posters on their research into mitochondria function and dysfunction. Chris Fearn presented his PhD work on developing mitochondrial DNA sequencing pipelines.

March 2024
Congratulations to Fai and Kwan on submitting their theses. It has been a fantastic 6-months and we will be sad to see you leave the laboratory. Good luck for your upcoming viva voce examinations!

February 2024
Laboratory trip to the ExCel in London for the Festival of Genomics and Biodata!

We are pleased to welcome Matina Balliu who has joined the laboratory to investigate factors that influence the integrity of the mitochondrial genome for her MRes!
January 2024
Congratulations to Sattaporn Weawsiangsang on her publication in Antibiotics. The work examined the potential for hydroquinine as an antimicrobial agent as part of a multi-purpose contact lens solution to prevent adhesion and biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Happy New Year from the Baldock Lab!!

October 2023
Welcome to Areeba Marib who is joining the Baldock Laboratory for her PhD! Areeba will be investigating the mechanisms that protect and repair mitochondrial DNA.
We are excited to welcome international visiting scientists, Nontaporn Rattanachak and Sattaporn Weawsiangsang, from Naresuan University to continue investigating the antimicrobial properties and potential uses of hydroquinine.

Congratulations to Nontaporn Rattanachak on her latest article now published in Methods and Protocols. In this paper, Nontaporn developed and tested an assay to rapidly detect the presence of genes associated with antimicrobial resistance via efflux pump mechanisms in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Read about the effluxR assay here.
September 2023
Congratulations to Sattaporn Weawsiangsang and collaborators on the acceptance of their work for publication in International Journal of Molecular Sciences. The work examines the molecular pathways targeted by hydroquinine to elicit its antimicrobial effects. You can read the article here.
August 2023
Thanks to research excellence funding the lab now has access to a high-performance computer to run AlphaFold protein structure prediction for both monomers and multimers.

April 2023
Excited to be heading off to the Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Neurodegeneration conference hosted in Nottingham

Applications for the faculty funded PhD studentship have now closed! Shortlisting is now in progress.
March 2023
The lab has been awarded one of four PCR Biosystems Research Grants.

February 2023
Pleased to welcome Kelly Doughty to the laboratory to complete her PhD – lots of experiments await.
Janurary 2023
We have been awarded funding for a 3-year PhD studentship available in the Baldock laboratory.
Collaborative work with the University of South Carolina and York College Pennsylvania has been published in Expert Opinion on Drug Safety.
December 2022
Our editorial in collaboration with Naresuan University has been accepted in Expert Opinion on Drug Discovery.
